Emily and Zeb's Homer Backyard Wedding, 8/2/14

Every event that I play has something "memorable" that sets it apart from the rest. Emily and Zeb's wedding and reception had plenty of different elements that make it stick out in my memory. From the first time I met them, I could tell they were meant for each other... and it was no surprise that their families and friends went above and beyond to help make their wedding day an incredible experience.

The entire event took place at Zebs' grandparents' home, located atop a hill above Homer, in Cortland County. A sprawling lawn provided plenty of room for guest parking, an outdoor ceremony, a huge party tent for the reception, and even a "classic car cruise-in" with several unique show cars on display. At the end of the night, guests lit Chinese lanterns and watched them float towards the stars. The weather couldn't have been better -- sunny but not too hot during the day. After nightfall, clear skies resulted in cooler temperatures, but it didn't start to feel like it was getting too cool until things started to wind down around midnight. (Maybe it was actually cooler earlier, but nobody noticed it due to all the dancing!)

In order to provide sound for both the ceremony and reception, my equipment set-up location was under the party tent, along the side closest to the ceremony area. The officiant wore my wireless lapel mic, which was also able to pick up the bride and groom as they spoke their vows. An extra-long cable feeding one speaker on the lawn provided ample coverage for guests to hear the ceremony. My other speaker was under the tent, allowing for cocktail hour music to begin immediately after the ceremony. The speaker which was serving the ceremony was moved to the dance floor after guests cleared from the ceremony area.

Here are the songs Emily and Zeb selected for the key moments of the ceremony and reception:

  • Ceremony Processional: Piano Guys / A Thousand Years
  • Ceremony Bridal Entrance: Wagner / Wedding March
  • Ceremony Recessional: Pachelbel / Canon in D
  • Wedding Party Intros: Sara Bareilles / I Choose You
  • First Dance: Lana Del Rey / Lucky Ones
  • Bride / Father Dance: T Carter Music / Daddy’s Angel
  • Groom / Mother Dance: Rascal Flatts / My Wish
  • Cake Cutting: Nat King Cole / L-O-V-E, followed by Dean Martin / That’s Amore
  • Bouquet Toss: Shania Twain / Man I Feel Like a Woman
  • Garter Toss: Queen / Another One Bites the Dust
  • Last Dance of the Night for Everyone: Louis Armstrong & Kenny G / What a Wonderful World

You'll notice in the photos that my lights were set-up next to my table, rather than above them. That's because my table was positioned directly under the edge of the tent, where the tent is at its lowest. There wasn't enough headroom there for the lights, but the "corner" setup worked out very nicely.

One of my least-favorite responsibilities as a DJ is telling guests I won't be able to play their song request, because it's getting close to the end of the night and there are already too many other requests queued up.  I was quite surprised when one guest didn't want to accept that the party was almost over -- so, he started passing around a shoe (literally -- as there weren't any hats laying around) to collect money to get me to stay longer.  I wound up staying for an extra hour, and the guests kept the dance floor packed right up to the very end!

Afterwards, Emily provided this wonderful 5-star review on WeddingWire:

Peter was the best DJ I could have ever asked for! My husband and I are soo thankful that we found him on Wedding Wire! He was absolutely amazing!

He was so incredibly helpful with planning the wedding and setting up our timeline. Every email he sent was so thorough and he was attentive to every little detail.

We had sent him a list of suggested music throughout the night for cocktail hour, dinner hour, and dancing. He took our suggestions and made an excellent playlist that included all the genres and artists we loved. All of our guests were dancing all night, and everyone was having so much fun that they pitched in money to have Peter stay an extra hour. And he stayed!

Peter is proof that a great DJ is the key to an awesome party!

Thanks for the great review, Emily and Zeb!  I wish you and your families all the best!  You had a wonderful group of relatives and friends on-hand to help you celebrate, and I really enjoyed being a part of your big day.
